Scripture Mastery Badges

In seminary classes Mormon youth study the Holy Bible and the Book of Mormon, as well as the Pearl of Great Price.
Youth in the LDS church are encouraged to attend four years of early morning religion classes during their high school years.  These classes are known as Seminary.  Each year they study different books in the Mormon canon of scripture: the New Testament, the Old Testament with the Pearl of Great Price (a collection of scripture revealed to the prophet Joseph Smith in the mid 1800s), the Book of Mormon, and the Doctrine and Covenants.  Youth are asked to memorize 25 important verses of scripture, called Scripture Master Scriptures each year of their study.

The Mormon Badge Project envisions badges as being a way to motivate youth to memorize these scriptures.  Earning a badge for each scripture memorized could encourage them to complete all 25 scriptures each year.  Sharing the badges to Facebook would also create opportunities to talk about their religion with friends of other faiths.

Look for a prototype Scripture Mastery badge in a week or two.  Stay tuned!  If you attend Seminary as a student or teach a seminary class, please leave us a comment.  Would you like to earn Scripture Mastery badges or use them with your class?  Why or why not?
